Remo Mondo djembes are a sensational option for touring percussionists. That's because their weather-resistant Acousticon shells are made from 100% recycled materials.
This ensures that each djembe has a consistent tone from drum to drum, allowing Remo to precisely tailor the pitch and bass response to the instrument. Mondo Skyndeep graphic djembe heads provide a great look, a warm bass tone, and a dry slap. 12" Djembe, Key Tuned, with Skyndeep Head and Rope Handle - Adinkra For a 12" djembe, it has a very sharp, twang with no real way to get the deep tones found in other wood shell, natural skin head, djembes.
Remo makes a similar 14" djembe with a synthetic head and shell. That model may have the sound I was expecting this model to have. However the 14" drum lacks the cool graphics (Adinkra) finish. I have the 14 inch version and it has the same graphics as the 12 inch model. I get a deep bass sound but have to hit the center of the drum with the end of my forearm rather than the palm of my hand.
Big booming bass. ... THE TONE OF THIS PARTICULAR DJEMBE WAS TOO SHARP FOR ME.

“The Pearls definitely 'look' better, and I guess sound a little more 'woody' or calf-skinny (i.e. "warm"?), for actual responsiveness, high-end crack and bass boom--just playability and sound, I think the REMO Mondo 14" & 12" still take the blue ribbon.
