This means each djembe has the same rich, resonant tone—from the first drum off the production line to the last. The Acousticon shells are fitted with Remo's Skyndeep drumheads, which provide a warm bass tone and crisp slap while resisting damage from heat, cold, and humidity.
Remo carefully tailors each drum during manufacturing to produce tones suited for West African rhythms as well as world music, drum circles, education and stage performance. The result is a djembe with a satisfying range of sounds, from high slaps to deep bass notes. Well, this 16" Remo being one of the bigger ones available was just way too expensive (for me) so... Some of our material is happy-clappy, but a lot is low-key, quiet, meditative stuff. I needed something much deeper than a doumbek or most djembes. I got a used 16" Remo djembe from GC, with an older "Mo-Fa" head.
The bass was wonderful, the "Remo ping" was pretty strong also.

“The Pearls definitely 'look' better, and I guess sound a little more 'woody' or calf-skinny (i.e. "warm"?), for actual responsiveness, high-end crack and bass boom--just playability and sound, I think the REMO Mondo 14" & 12" still take the blue ribbon.
