By the time loads of the coating has chipped off it is time to change the head anyway because it has started to stretch slightly in the middle.

If you are a hard hitter, and don't want a darker snare sound, go for the Remo CS coated head- it is basically one of these with a black spot stuck underneath which stops the stretching and more than doubled the life I got from a head when I was in my 'rock' phase, with only a marginal difference if feel.

I bought this head for a 90's TAMA snare that i use in a number of different modern genres. Remo is the brand i have used for decades and it never failed me. Pros: As the title says, its versatility, which is a quality i value very much, as well as the price/quality ratio. I love these heads, and I can't imagine ever changing to another one having experimented with most of the available options.
